Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery

Cosmetic periodontal surgery is performed to reduce the effects of “Gummy Smile” or uneven gum line, gum line recession and bone grafting following tooth loss.

Gummy Smile or Uneven Gum Line
Do you like your smile? Do you think your teeth look too short or that your smile is too gummy? Do your gums cover too much of some teeth but leave others the right length? If you answered yes to any of the above, consider crown lengthening, a procedure where excess gum tissue is removed to expose more of the crown of the tooth. Your gumline is then sculpted, giving your new smile a natural, healthy look.

Gum recession: Long teeth/Exposed roots
Gum recession can sometimes cause your tooth roots to become exposed, making your teeth look long and making you look older than you actually are! Gum recession happens for a variety of reasons, including periodontal diseases. Whatever the cause, exposed roots are unappealing and leave you vulnerable to developing cavities on your tooth roots.

Soft tissue grafts and other root coverage procedures cover exposed roots and reduce further gum recession, protecting vulnerable roots from decay.

Bone grafting following tooth loss
After tooth loss, the jawbone recedes, causing an indentation in the gums and jawbone where the tooth used to be. Not only unattractive, it also causes the replacement tooth to look too long compared to adjacent teeth.

A ridge augmentation procedure can recapture the natural contour of the gums and jaw. We then create a new, natural looking tooth that will be both beautiful and easy to clean.

Bone grafting following tooth loss preserves the socket/ridge and minimizes gum and bone collapse. This procedure helps reduce shrinkage and create a more esthetic tooth replacement for either implant crown or fixed bridge around the replacement teeth.
